Leeves at Portstone Cafe sits quietly within the garden nursery on Ferry Road, offering a calm retreat where the usual buzz of Christchurch life feels a little slower and more grounded. This is very much a neighbourhood spot, popular with locals who appreciate food made with care and a setting that invites lingering — whether in the gentle shade among green plants or by one of the sunny tables when the weather allows.

Best known for breakfast and brunch, Leeves does eggs Benedict particularly well, pairing it with their well-crafted long black coffee that draws both early risers and mid-morning catch-ups. The coffee here holds its own among Christchurch’s strong café culture, showing attention to detail that attracts regulars who want consistent quality without fuss.

The atmosphere is unhurried and welcoming, notably absent of the usual phone fixation seen in many cafes. Instead, this is a place where conversation flows easily — friends sharing meals, families enjoying weekends, and even visitors from nearby swimming pools stopping by for a post-swim treat. The setting inside the garden centre adds a unique touch, with the plants creating a peaceful backdrop that feels worlds away from a typical urban cafe.

For anyone seeking a casual spot to genuinely connect over good food, Leeves delivers well beyond the average. Their sticky date pudding pie and fresh-baked muffins often tempt dessert lovers looking to finish a meal naturally, reflecting the hands-on approach to homemade-style cooking. Visiting here on a weekend or a calm weekday morning can be especially rewarding, as it aligns with the more relaxed local rhythm.

Overall, Leeves at Portstone offers more than just a caffeine fix; it’s a place where food, coffee, and community intersect in a setting that feels both thoughtful and lived-in. Those who come here tend to value quality over hype and quiet company over crowds, making it a comforting spot for everyday rituals or casual catch-ups.

Hands down the best cafe in Christchurch. People sit, eat and share here, they don’t turn into statues staring at phones. It’s old fashioned, real food made by people who know what real food is and what it should smell, look and taste like! Everyone we see coming here are people who know good food! It’s awesome

This was such a lovely experience! The food was fantastic and so well presented. The atmosphere was lovely and they had beautiful deserts and slices for Mother's Day. Such a lovely setting in the garden centre too!
